Building For a Future We Can Share…

St John’s is a Grade II listed building in the heart of Whetstone. You might have walked past our building many times without noticing, but despite being set back and hidden from view, once you find us our welcome is warm, loud and joyous.

Everything that we do in our life together at St John’s is rooted in our desire to service God by fulfilling his calling for us to be a community of radical and inclusive welcome. This vision currently finds expression in our worship, our mission and our community life, particularly in the diversity of cultures and religions and the wide range of ages we have coming together each week. It’s this community we that our building is for and together we are building for a future we can share.

Our project is underpinned by three values which drive our decision making…

  • Faith

At St John’s we are a community of faith: faith in God, faith in each other and faith in our community. Our project aims to restore our building to a place where we can live out this faith in a beautiful, practical building.

  • Community

Our project is built on community. We have seen how people love and use our building and we have responded to that in our design and plans for the space, offering more to our community with an improved building and space.

  • Belonging

In today’s busy world, finding belonging can be harder than ever, but at St John’s people find a place to belong. Our new building will give us more opportunity to help people find a welcome, find joy and find a place to belong.

  • A glass-fronted welcoming cafe including children’s play area that gives the church presence on the High Road, open to all the community.

  • A full-spec kitchen to serve the community cafe.

  • Toilets to serve the cafe and church, including accessible toilets, and showers to support running a night shelter.

  • Lifts and ramps to ensure the building is fully accessible.

  • Extension to the South Side to allow for breakout/meeting rooms for the congregation and for hire for the community.

  • A two-floor gallery with space above for families to enjoy during the service, and space below to use for breakout groups. The downstairs space will have a small servery kitchen.

  • A restored and beautified Sanctuary with a rich colour and a beautiful reredos, making this a sacred space of faith.

  • A new vestry space relocated to the back of church

  • A restored and re-ordered Nave with new flooring, underfloor heating and re-plastered walls. The pews will be removed and replaced with wooden chairs which offer flexible seating options.
